Our 39th Annual Swimming Gala was held on 25th September, 1997. The weather was fine. As usual, the venue was Li Cheng Uk Swimming Pool. The objective of this event was to arouse students' interest in swimming and to help students improve their swimming skills through competing with other students.

The competition began at 8:30. Long before 8:30, lots of students crowded in the canteen of the Li Cheng Uk Swimming Pool. As soon as the gate was opened by the prefects, students rushed into the spectator stand. Meanwhile, swimmers were doing warm-up exercises alongside the swimming pool.

The competition started with the bang of the gunshot. The competitors tried their best to compete for first place. There were many talented and skillful swimmers in our school. They were experts in many different kinds of swimming styles, like the free-stroke, butterfly, etc.

Among the various events, if one says that the B-grade 200m free-stroke was the most impressive one, nobody will deny this. There were only two competitors in this event. As soon as the event started, they swam at their fastest. Later, one of the competitors accelerated whereas the other fell behind. The slower competitor was due to lose but he still tried to do as well as he could. When the faster competitor finished, the slower one did not stop and continued to the finish line. No sooner had he finished came the applause from the spectators. I was impressed by his spirit of not giving up. His sportsmanship deserved the applause. After the heat events, there came the climax of the day, which was the finals. Every corner of the pool was filled with the applause from the spectators. The group of skillful swimmers struggled hand for the medals. The "fierce" competition finally came to a conclusion in which our Principal, Mr. Norman So, gave his encouraging speech to us all.

This year's Swimming Gala was no doubt a great success. The whole programme ran smoothly with the cooperation of the students. Many records were broken. Our school spirit was once again exemplified in this Swimming Gala.
